He is a group leader heading the Laboratory of Protein Evolution.

He is most interested in the enzymes and proteins from the alpha-amylase family - the clan GH-H of glycoside hydrolase families GH13, GH70 and GH77 as well as the family GH57, especially in their evolution as well as their structure-function and structure-stability relationships. In addition, he is also very interested in bioinformatics studies of starch-binding domains that currently involve ten CAZy families: CBM20, 21, 25, 26, 34, 41, 45, 48, 53 and 58.
