Jan-Hendrik studied biochemistry and hydrobiology/fisheries at the University of Hamburg (Germany) and graduated about digestive enzymes in the marine crustacean ''Cancer pagurus'' in 2005. The PhD work focused on agarases and porphyranases belonging to GH16. Since march 2010 he is doing a PostDoc in the group of ^^^Alisdair Boraston^^^ at the University of Victoria (Canada) where he received an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship.
